This month is called Marcheshvan because there are no holidays in it, for in all months there is a holiday: in Kislev and Tevet there is Hanukkah, in Shevat there is Tu B'Shevat, in Adar there is Purim, etc. The only month that has no holiday in it is Cheshvan, therefore they call it Marcheshvan because it has bitterness (mar) that there is no holiday in it. And there are those who say, like "Mr. (Mar) So-and-so," Mr. Cheshvan to pay honor to it since it has no holiday.
