Questions that the Rosh Yeshiva Was Asked About Pidyon Nefesh
There are several types of Pidyon Nefesh. Therefore, regarding a simple Pidyon Nefesh—where one takes the money and recites a basic text—anyone can perform it. [However, there is still a virtue in having even this done specifically by a great and righteous person (tzaddik), whose words and requests are more accepted On High, as the Talmud states: "Let him go to a wise scholar..." etc.] On the other hand, the Pidyon Nefesh arranged by our master the Rashash (may his merit protect us, Amen) can only be performed by someone who has studied the hidden Torah (Kabbalah) and knows the proper sequence of mystical intentions (kavanot).

Question: Regarding the Pidyon Nefesh (Ransom of the Soul) that is customarily performed on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and the eve of Yom Kippur: should it be performed for a healthy person as well, or specifically for someone who is sick?
Answer: It is advisable to perform it even for a healthy person, and this is indeed the common custom, as the special virtue (segulah) of this Pidyon is to ensure that one completes their year.
Question: Can I perform a Pidyon Nefesh myself for a sick friend, or is a rabbi or Kabbalist specifically required?
Answer: There are several types of Pidyon Nefesh. Therefore, regarding a simple Pidyon Nefesh—where one takes the money and recites a basic text—anyone can perform it. Question: Can a person perform a Pidyon Nefesh for themselves?
Answer: Since "a prisoner cannot free himself from prison," it is customary that a person does not perform it for themselves. This was also the custom of our teacher and master, the elder of the Kabbalists, Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri (of blessed and righteous memory), who would give us money to perform a Pidyon Nefesh on his behalf, even though he himself was capable of performing it.
Question: What is the Pidyon Nefesh (Ransom of the Soul) of Eliyahu the Prophet?
Answer:There is a Pidyon Nefesh order that is traditionally accepted as having been arranged by Eliyahu the Prophet and is brought down by the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov and others. Thank G-d, it has been beautifully arranged in the book "Pidyon Nefesh" published by our yeshiva, the Yeshivat Nahar Shalom Kabbalists (may Almighty G-d establish and build it, Amen).
