An Essay Based on the Holy Zohar: The Secret of the Mitzvah of Repentance

The commandment of repentance, which is regret over the past and acceptance [resolute commitment] regarding the future, is in the world of Binah (Understanding), the world of Beriah (Creation). And one needs to practice it primarily in the month of Elul, because Elul is numerically equivalent to Binah: Binah (בינה) has the same letters as Ben Y-H (בן י"ה); "Ben" (son) is the letter Vav (ו'), and together with Y-H (י"ה) they form Y-H-V (יה"ו). And when a person sins, the letter Hei (ה')—which is the Holy Shechinah (Divine Presence)—departs from the place. And through repentance and verbal confession with the mouth, which is in the aspect of Malchut (Kingship), we return it [the letter Hei] to Y-H-V (יה"ו), and then the Name Havayah (Y-H-V-H), blessed be He, becomes complete. And this is the literal meaning of Teshuvah (תשובה): "Tashuv H'" (תשוב ה' – letter Hei returns). And then the Shechinah rests upon the head of the person, and the person succeeds in all his endeavors.

Key Themes & Takeaways
- The Etymology of Teshuvah: The word Teshuvah (תשובה) is split into Tashuv Hei (תשוב ה' - "Return the letter Hei").
- The Cosmic Effect of Sin: Sin separates the final letter Hei (representing Malchut and the Shechinah) from the letters Y-H-V (representing the upper realms and Zeir Anpin). This separation caused the destruction of the Temple and the Jewish exile.
- Repentance via Confession: In the absence of Temple sacrifices, verbal confession (Vidui) acts in place of offerings. Speech stems from Malchut, using the mouth to reconnect the Hei back to Y-H-V, thereby restoring the full Divine Name (Y-H-V-H).
- Prerequisite for Redemption: Messianic redemption is directly tied to repentance. All calculated dates for redemption have passed; it now depends exclusively on completing Hashem's Name through Teshuvah.
- Inevitability of Repentance: If Israel does not repent willingly, Hashem promises to raise a ruler with decrees harsher than Pharaoh's to compel them to return, ensuring the ultimate completion of His Name.
