Saying Kaddish

By Yeshivat Nahar Shalom Staff•August 18, 2026
reciting Kaddishhonoring father and mother after deathYalkut Yosef, Laws of Mourning, Chapter 30, Section 1the Nahar Shalom Yeshiva of Kabbalists

The Sages stated: "Honor him during his lifetime and after his death." The meaning of honor after death is to exalt the honor of one's father—such as calling him "My Father, My Master"—and to bring him gratification after his passing by reciting Kaddish, lighting a memorial candle, holding a memorial service on the anniversary, receiving an aliyah to the Torah on the anniversary, and similar acts.

It is customary to recite Kaddish for a father and mother because a son can merit his parents after their passing, as he is considered part of them since they brought him into the world. This custom has spread throughout all Jewish communities and has a foundation in holy sources.

Kaddish for the Elevation of th Soul

Yalkut Yosef, Laws of Mourning, Chapter 30, Section 1

Custom The custom of reciting the Kaddish for the elevation of the souls of deceased parents is founded upon holy mountains, in the midrashim of the Sages, as it brings great benefit to the soul of the deceased—even if they were completely righteous—to elevate them from level to level in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, one must recite Kaddish on Saturdays and holidays as well. This is especially true for the Kaddish recited after Torah study and after a sermon, which brings great gratification to the deceased. The recitation of Kaddish falls under the obligation to honor one's father and mother after their passing, as well as every year on the anniversary of their death (Yahrzeit). This is included in honoring parents, as the Sages stated: "Honor him during his lifetime and after his death." The meaning of honor after death is to exalt the honor of one's father—such as calling him "My Father, My Master"—and to bring him gratification after his passing by reciting Kaddish, lighting a memorial candle, holding a memorial service on the anniversary, receiving an aliyah to the Torah on the anniversary, and similar acts.

You may appoint a scholar from the Nahar Shalom Yeshiva of Kabbalists as an agent to recite Kaddish for the elevation of your loved one's soul.
